Dobbies Peat Free No 1 Young Plant Compost + JI 10L is ideal for young plants. It has been specially developed, with a combination of all the vital minerals for maintaining plant growth and health.
With its new mix of loam and grit, it provides the perfect structure for your plant’s roots and designed as the perfect medium for pricking out seedlings or potting up young plants.
Please note this compost is not suitable for ericaceous plants. We recommend using Dobbies ericaceous compost with peat free John Innes for all acid loving plants like Azaleas, Camellias, Rhododendrons or Heathers.
Planting & care instructions

- Wear gloves while gardening and wash your hands thoroughly after use.Preparation & usage
How to use:
- Put on a pair of gloves & crumble compost between your hands to break down any lumps so that it regains its open texture.Pricking out seedlings:
- Loosely fill the tray or pot with compost and level out
- Use a dibber or small fork to loosen the compost beneath the seedling
- Holding the seedling by a seed leaf, ease the seedling out of its compost keeping as much of the original compost sticking to the roots as possible
- Make a hole in the new compost with a dibber & place the roots of the seedling in the hole
- Gently firm the compost around the plant, spacing out the seedlings evenly
- Water gently with a fine rose to settle the compost around the root
- Keep in a warm spot out of direct sunlight & protect from frostPotting up rooted cuttings:
- Put a layer of compost in the bottom of the new pots or tray cells
- Position the rooted cutting into the pot & top up with fresh compost around the roots
- Water gently & keep in a warm, shaded spot protected from frostGrowing on:
- After 6 weeks feed with plant food & then re-pot into Dobbies potting-on compost (peat free John Innes no.2)Handy gardening tips:
- Store in a dry, frost-free place away from any garden chemicals
- Reseal the bag after use
