Freestanding Greenhouses

A freestanding greenhouse is the ultimate statement of gardening intent, providing a dedicated, independent environment where your plants can flourish away from the shadows of house walls.

Our collection of freestanding greenhouses at Dobbies is designed to give you total flexibility in your garden layout. Unlike lean-to models, these standalone structures can be positioned in...

 |

The main benefit of a freestanding greenhouse is light. Because it isn't attached to a building, it can receive 360-degree sunlight throughout the day, preventing your plants from becoming "leggy" as they reach for the light. It also gives you more freedom to choose the most level, well-drained spot in your garden, away from any potential obstructions or shade from your home.

Wooden freestanding greenhouses offer a classic aesthetic and superior natural insulation, which is excellent for maintaining a steady temperature. Plastic based growhouses or tunnels tunnels are often more cost-effective, portable, and easier to relocate if you decide to change your garden layout in the future.

Stability is vital for any standalone structure. Premium timber models should be bolted down to a solid concrete or paved base. For our lighter plastic or walk-in models, we recommend using heavy-duty ground anchors or tethers. Many gardeners also use heavy paving slabs placed over the internal base frame to provide extra ballast against strong winds.

For the best results, position your freestanding greenhouse where it will receive the most sunlight, ideally with the longest side facing south. Avoid placing it directly under large trees, which can block light and drop sap or branches on the roof. Ensure there is enough space (at least 1 metre) around the entire structure to allow for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Yes, for many of our premium wooden freestanding greenhouses, professional installation is included in the price. Our expert teams will ensure the frame is perfectly square and securely anchored, saving you time and effort. For our self-assembly and "in a box" ranges, we provide comprehensive instructions for a straightforward two-person assembly.

Because freestanding greenhouses are fully exposed to the sun, they can heat up quickly. Most of our models feature integrated roof vents to allow hot air to rise and escape. To create an effective through-draught, we recommend opening both the roof vents and the main door during warm weather. Many gardeners also opt for automatic vent openers, which react to the temperature and open without you needing to be there.
