Walk in Greenhouse

Walk In Greenhouses

Maximise growing space with a walk-in greenhouse - perfect for taller plants and easy access, our range includes plastic, timber, and walk-around models.

A walk-in greenhouse or growhouse is the perfect solution for gardeners who want to move beyond simple cold frames and mini-structures. At Dobbies, our selection ranges from the practical growhouses with reinforced plastic covers, to premium walk-around greenhouses that offer 360-degree access to your crops. These taller structures are specifically designed to accommodate vertical growing; they are ideal for indeterminate tomatoes, climbing beans, and tall flower varieties. Whether you need a portable walk-in tunnel for seasonal protection or a permanent timber structure that acts as a stunning garden focal point, our range of greenhouses ensures you can garden in comfort, protected from the wind and rain.

The primary advantage is accessibility and vertical space. A walk-in greenhouse allows you to stand comfortably inside while tending to your plants, making maintenance much easier on your back. The increased height also permits the use of taller shelving units and provides enough clearance for tall-growing crops like vine tomatoes and cucumbers that would quickly outgrow a smaller structure.

All our plastic greenhouses are designed for durability, but because they are lightweight, they must be properly secured. We recommend using the provided ground stakes and guy ropes, and if possible, positioning the walk-in structure in a sheltered spot. Many gardeners also place heavy paving slabs over the internal bottom flap of the cover to provide extra weight and prevent the wind from getting underneath.

A walk-around greenhouse, such as our Victorian timber models, is a premium design that allows access from all sides. Unlike traditional greenhouses where you stand in a central path, these clever structures often feature opening panels or doors that allow you to reach every plant from the outside or inside, maximising the internal growing area and providing exceptional ventilation.

Because walk-in greenhouses and growhouses have a larger volume of air, they stay warmer for longer than mini greenhouses but can still overheat in direct summer sun. Most of our models feature roll-up zip doors or integrated vents. For the best results, open these early in the morning to allow air to circulate. On very hot days, leaving the door partially unzipped will create the through-draught necessary to prevent your plants from scorching.

For permanent timber models, a base of paving slabs or concrete is ideal for stability. For portable or plastic walk-in tunnels, you can place them directly onto firm soil, but many gardeners prefer a gravel base since it provides excellent drainage and helps to suppress weeds while maintaining a level surface for your pots and seed trays.

Yes, walk-in structures are incredibly versatile. In spring and summer, they are perfect for heat-loving vegetables and tall flowers. In the autumn and winter, the protected environment is ideal for growing hardy winter salads or for "housed" pots of herbs. Because you can fit a small heater inside a walk-in model more easily than a mini-house, they are also excellent for overwintering tender perennials like fuchsias.
