Garden Heaters, Fire Pits & Chimineas

These garden heaters, fire pits and chimineas are sure to keep you and your guests warm and cosy throughout the year, while adding a warm and inviting feeling to your outdoor space.

When the sun dips and the evening air turns crisp, the right heating solution makes all the difference to your outdoor living experience. At Dobbies, we offer a diverse selection to suit every garden layout, from the instant, clean heat of electric and gas patio heaters to the rustic charm of wood-burning fire pits and traditional chimineas. Whether you’re looking for a sleek, modern centrepiece for a contemporary terrace or a heritage-style clay chiminea for a cosy corner, our range combines safety, durability, and style to help you make the most of your outdoor space and garden furniture in any season.

Chimineas are traditional, front-loading outdoor fireplaces primarily used to provide radiant heat and atmosphere on patios. Their distinctive bulbous body and vertical flue are designed to contain a fire efficiently while directing smoke upwards and away from your guests. Beyond their heating capabilities, they serve as a striking architectural focal point and are often used for toasting marshmallows or simply creating a cosy evening ambiance.

Absolutely. Chimineas are highly effective at radiating heat. Because the fire is enclosed, the walls of the chiminea (whether made of clay, cast iron, or steel) absorb the thermal energy and radiate it outwards like a domestic radiator. While a fire pit provides a 360-degree open flame, a chiminea provides a more concentrated, directed heat from the front opening, making it perfect for smaller seating areas.

Chimineas are very safe when used correctly, as the enclosed bowl prevents logs from rolling out and reduces the risk of stray sparks. For maximum safety, always ensure your chiminea is placed on a stable, non-combustible surface like stone or paving - never directly on wooden decking. We also recommend keeping a safe distance from overhanging trees, fences, and sheds, and always using a spark guard if your model includes one.

For the best results, you should burn kiln-dried hardwood logs, such as oak, ash, or beech. These produce a consistent heat with minimal smoke and "spitting." You can also use heat logs or specialist fire pit fuels. Avoid burning treated wood, pallet slats, or green garden waste, as these can release unpleasant odours and excessive smoke, which may bother your neighbours and dampen the evening atmosphere.

The choice usually comes down to atmosphere versus convenience. Fire pits and chimineas offer a traditional experience with real flames, wood-smoke aromas, and a natural glow. Electric or gas patio heaters, however, provide instant heat at the flick of a switch or the turn of a dial. They are often preferred for dining areas where you want clean, smoke-free warmth without the need to tend to a fire.

Maintenance is key to longevity. For metal fire pits and chimineas, ensure you clear out cold ash regularly to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to rust. Clay chimineas should be kept dry and protected from frost to prevent cracking. Regardless of the material, we highly recommend using a fitted, weather-resistant cover once the unit is completely cold to shield it from the British rain and winter weather.
