Growing edible flowers at home

Surprisingly, there are a few flowers in our gardens that work just as well on our plates. Here’s how you can grow one of them yourself – Nasturtium!

Step 2: Planting and care

  1. Nasturtiums can be sown straight into the ground. Make sure your chosen space is weed-free
  2. Sprinkle the seeds carefully and cover with soil
  3. Water regularly. If the plants are crowded, you can thin out
  4. Plants should appear in 7-10 days. Your flowers will take around 8 weeks to grow

Step 3: Harvesting

  1. Cut off any dead flowers, this encourages more to grow
  2. When picking, snip off the flowers with scissors and make sure they’re washed well. The best time to pick them is in the morning
  3. You can keep them in water in the fridge until you’re ready to use them
  4. Nasturtiums are annuals, but collect the seeds and save them for next year!

How to use your Nasturtium flowers

  • Add them to salads. You can use the whole flower or pull the petals apart
  • Try them out as garnishes on pasta

  • They make great decorations on cakes and other desserts

  • Bees and butterflies love them, so make sure to leave some flowers on the plants for your garden insects
