For this activity, you’ll need:
- A packet of Nasturtium seeds
- Rake
- Trowel
- Plant label and pencil
Step 1: Get your seeds ready
- Nasturtiums come in bright shades of red, orange andyellow. Choose your favourite or a mix
- You’ll find seed packets in your local Dobbies store in the flower seeds section
Step 2: Planting and care
- Nasturtiums can be sown straight into the ground. Make sure your chosen space is weed-free
- Sprinkle the seeds carefully and cover with soil
- Water regularly. If the plants are crowded, you can thin out
- Plants should appear in 7-10 days. Your flowers will take around 8 weeks to grow
Step 3: Harvesting
- Cut off any dead flowers, this encourages more to grow
- When picking, snip off the flowers with scissors and make sure they’re washed well. The best time to pick them is in the morning
- You can keep them in water in the fridge until you’re ready to use them
- Nasturtiums are annuals, but collect the seeds and save them for next year!
How to use your Nasturtium flowers
- Add them to salads. You can use the whole flower or pull the petals apart
-
Try them out as garnishes on pasta
-
They make great decorations on cakes and other desserts
-
Bees and butterflies love them, so make sure to leave some flowers on the plants for your garden insects
