How to decorate a Christmas doorway

Extend your festive decor outdoors this season and create a stunning Christmas display on your patio or doorway. Wreaths, garlands, and outdoor lights come together to light up your front porch and create a welcoming atmosphere for anyone visiting over the holiday period.

Discover our top tips on creating a festive front-door display this Christmas.

How to decorate a Christmas doorway

Use wreaths to create a Christmas door

Hanging a wreath on your front door is a magical way to start the beginning of the festive season. They’re a charming addition, and are the centrepieces that sets the tone for the rest of your doorway décor.

Making your own can be a fun festive activity and adds sentimental value to your wreath. Or if you’re short on time or want something you can bring out year after year, a real-looking artificial wreath can be decorated with baubles, dried oranges, and other materials to make it more personal to you.

Your wreath could also be an extension of your indoor Christmas decorations – for example if you have a snowy artificial tree inside, you could choose an artificial wreath to match. If you’ve gone for a colourful and whimsical theme, a rainbow-coloured wreath made from baubles brings the charm outside, too.

Alternatively, you could hang a garland or swag from your door frame – perfect for those who are short on space but still want to add a touch of festive cheer to their entryway. Top tip: you can frame your doorway with a garland for an extra-special Christmassy touch.

Illuminate your porch

Outdoor lights can be a beautiful addition to a Christmas doorway. Versatile and stylish, there’s many ways you can use lights to add to your outdoor festive display.

For those who prefer to keep their décor understated and subtle, simply lining your porchway or doorframe with twinkling string lights can have a big impact without going overboard.

If you’d rather create a display that’s merry and bright, opt for Christmas characters or novelty LED lights that add whimsy and charm to your patio.

If you’re limited on space, you can always extend the display onto your front garden and line your walkway with pathfinder lights, or drape trees and shrubbery in string lights for a magical glow.

Christmas greenery

One of the best things about Christmas is all the colours – deep reds and foliage greens meet to create a festive palette that truly stands the test of time. Adding a natural flair to your front door will create an extra touch of seasonal warmth and tie your display together.

Pot-grown trees and evergreens are the perfect addition to any doorway. Their narrow shape makes them perfect for small spaces, and they can be decorated with lights, baubles, and other festive decor to add personality and style. If you’ve got a bit more space, you can group different sized pot-grown trees together to make a real impact.

If you’ve got less room to play with or you want to add additional floral motifs to your doorway, then consider creating your very own Christmas planter. Plant amaryllis bulbs in a pot around six-eight weeks before Christmas for them to be in full bloom over the festive period, or choose bedding plants like cyclamen, pansies, and violas to create a colourful display that you can enjoy immediately.
