To get started you'll need:
Before getting started, print off our handy leaf detective sheet. This will help you spot different leaves and identify which common UK tree they belong to
If you’d also like to do some bark rubbing while on your walk, you’ll need a few blank pieces of paper and some crayons or coloured chalk
Now it’s time to head outside and find some terrific trees
Step 1:
Put on comfy clothes and shoes that you can move around in easily. Don't forget sun protection if it's a bright day
Step 2:
Head to your local park or a nearby woodland area with your family
Step 3:
Look at the leaves of all the trees you pass. Are they big or small, smooth or rough, round or pointed?
Step 4:
Keep your eyes peeled for a leaf that matches a picture on your detective sheet. Once you find a match, tick it off. How many terrific trees can you spot?
To take a bark rubbing:
Press a piece of paper onto the trunk of the tree. Ask a family member or friend to help you hold it down
Run a crayon or coloured chalk over the paper. This should transfer the pattern of the bark onto your paper
While on your walk, remember to leave any plants or leaves where you find them so others can enjoy them too
