Create a rainforest in a jar

Create a rainforest in a jar

Bring the magic of the rainforest to your own home with this rainforest in a jar. Learn how to upcycle an old container into a mini tropical paradise.

Create a rainforest in a jar

For this activity you’ll need:

  •  A clean glass jar or clear plastic container (with or without a lid)
  • Small stones or pebbles
  • Multi-purpose compost
  • Small plants (like moss, ferns, or tiny succulents)
  • A spoon or small scoop
  • Decorations like little toy animals
  • A spray bottle with water

Step 1: Add the stones

Put a layer of small stones or pebbles at the bottom of your jar. This helps with drainage, so the plants don’t get too wet.

Step 2: Spoon in the soil

Add a thick layer of compost on top of the stones — about 5-8 cm deep. Pat it down gently.

Step 3: Plant your mini jungle

Make small holes in the soil with your finger or spoon. Carefully place your moss, ferns, or mini plants in each hole. Cover their roots with soil and pat gently.

Step 4: Decorate

Add tiny toy animals, mini trees, or anything that makes it look like a real rainforest.

Water lightly

5. Water lightly

Use the spray bottle to mist your plants. Don’t soak them — just enough to keep them damp.

6. Put it somewhere special

Place your rainforest jar on a windowsill with indirect sunlight. If you have a lid, you can put it on to create a mini greenhouse.
