For this activity, you’ll need:
- An old colander with handles (if you don’t have one at home, try a charity shop)
- Twine, cord or rope
- Plant membrane
- Trailing herbs or flowers – we recommend fushias or lobelia for flowers and golden or lemon thyme for herbs
- Potting compost
- Trowel
Herbs are a great way to bring tasty plants inside and make them even easier to use in the kitchen. Or you could choose to fill yours with beautiful flowers
Step 1: Preparing your materials
- Cut your plant membrane into a circular shape a bit bigger than the inside of the colander
- Take your twine or rope and cut four lengths at 50cm each
Step 2: Making your hanging basket
- Tie the ends of each piece of twine/rope to the handles of the colander, cut off any extra and move to one side
- Place the plant membrane inside the colander
Step 3: Adding your plants
- Carefully remove your plants from your pots and arrange them in the colander. Fill any gaps with compost
- Tie your four pieces of twine/rope together above the colanderNow it’s time to find a sunny spot somewhere that everyone can enjoy looking at it!
Get busy in the garden
