For this activity, you’ll need:
- Toilet roll tubes
- Scissors
- Compost
- Marigold seeds (we’ll be using these, but you can choose any type of seeds you want)
Step 1: Create your pots
-
Fold your toilet roll flat one way, then unfold and fold again the other way - the centre should be more squarish than circular
-
Using scissors, cut the tube in half, it’s easier when the tube is flat - you can always ask an adult to help
-
By doing this, you get two pots from every roll
-
On one end of the tube, cut flaps by cutting along each of your four folds
-
Fold the flaps in, like you would with a cardboard box, to make the bottom of your pot
Step 2: Get planting
- Fill your toilet roll pots with compost leaving about 1 inch at the top
- Sprinkle 2 or 3 seeds in each pot and cover with more compost, then water
- Keep them in a sunny spot, like a windowsill, and water regularly
- If you’re using different seeds, check the instructions on the packet
Step 3: Adding to your garden
- Once your young plant has two sets of leaves, it's ready to go into the ground
- To replant the flowers in the garden, you just need to dig a hole and add the whole pot
- Or you can take the cardboard off and add it to your compost
