Recycled welly planters

Plants don’t always have to be grown in pots. Here’s a way to decorate your garden and reuse your old wellies!

To get started, you’ll need:

  • Old wellies
  • Stones
  • Compost
  • Flower plants or small herbs (we’ll be using thyme for our how-to, but you can use whatever you want)

Step 1: Create drainage

  • Wash the wellies with warm soapy water and let them dry
  • Before you can add flowers, you’ll need to make sure that water can escape from the boots
  • Ask an adult to drill some small holes in the sole of your wellies
  • Then add a few stones at the bottom of each shoe

Step 2: Planting

  • Add compost to your boots and press down gently – make sure you get it right down to the toe
  • Leave some space at the top for your plant
  • Make a hole for your thyme plant and place it inside the boot - press down to make it tight
  • Make sure it’s watered well

Step 3: Care and harvesting

  • Thyme loves a sunny spot and doesn’t need much watering
  • It will need trimmed after it flowers – this helps it regrow

  • You can pick thyme all year round and it smells great!
