To get started you'll need:
Drawing materials – paper, crayons, pencils, or markers
A flat surface to place your paper onto – like a piece of cardboard or a large book
Objects to create interesting shadows like your favourite toys or plants and flowers from the garden
Let's do some drawing!
Step 1: Choose a sunny spot
Find a sunny spot in your garden where the sun is shining brightly
Step 2: Position your object
Select an object you want to create a shadow of. Place it on the ground or flat surface in the sunlight so it casts a shadow over your piece of paper. (You might want to place something underneath to help you draw more smoothly
Step 3: Trace the shadow
Use your crayon, pencil, or marker to carefully trace the outline of the shadow. Make sure to hold the paper still so it doesn't move! You can use rocks to weigh down your paper if it’s a windy day
Step 4: Observe the shadow
Notice how it changes throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. Shadows can become longer or shorter, thinner or wider depending on the sun's position
Step 5: Keep track of time
See how the shadows change over time, mark the starting time of your drawing. Then, come back to your drawing every hour or so and see how the shadow has moved or transformed. You can make multiple drawings on the same piece of paper!
