SQUIRREL NUTKIN'S CUTTINGS

Did you know that you can grow new veggies from the bits you’d usually throw away? Instead of adding your scraps to the compost, try this cool experiment instead

For this activity, you’ll need:

  • Different-sized glass containers
  • Cocktail sticks
  • Jug of water
  • A knife and chopping board>Root vegetables – celery, carrot and radish work best

Adult's supervision is required throughout

Step 1: Prepare your veggies

  • Ask an adult to help you chop 3cm off the root end of your vegetables
  • Keep the rest of the veg to enjoy later!

Step 2: Get them ready for the experiment

  • Carefully add 3 or 4 cocktail sticks into the sides of the root – these help it stay in place
  • Choose your container and balance the cocktail sticks across the top with the cut side of the vegetable facing downwards
  • Pour water into the container to reach the root and place on a sunny windowsill

Step 3: Watch them grow!

  • You will be able to watch as new roots grow into the water over several weeks
  • When they’re long enough, you can transplant them into a pot or flowerbed
