Adding extra flavour
Herbs are very popular in cooking because they help us add more flavour to our dishes. Basil is used a lot in pasta dishes, just like this one!
For this recipe, you'll need:
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- 400 gram can of cherry tomatoes in juice
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- A handful of fresh basil leaves
- 200 grams of dried spaghetti
Step 1: Prepare your spaghetti
- Ask an adult to help you fill a large saucepan with water
- Add a pinch of salt and put it on high heat until the water is boiling
- Add the spaghetti to the boiling water and cook by following the packet instructions
Step 2: Making the sauce
- While your spaghetti is cooking, ask an adult to put the oil in a frying pan over a gentle heat
- After a few minutes, add the chopped onion and cook for 5 minutes, stirring regularly
- Add the crushed garlic and cook for another couple of minutes before stirring in the tomatoes and juice
- Add some salt, pepper, the sugar and finally add most of the basil leaving a few leaves for decoration – let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes
Step 3: Serving your creation
- Drain the cooked spaghetti before adding it to your pan of sauce, mixing them together
- Use some tongs to help you put the spaghetti and sauce into bowls
- Add the basil leaves on top and enjoy!
