Before you get started, you’ll need to gather the right tools:
- Gloves
- Hand fork
- Bucket for weeds
Step 1: Identify your weeds
- Discuss with an adult which weeds you want to remove and which you’d like to keep
- Make sure only weeds are dug up, not garden flowers that have been sown or planted
Step 2: Get weeding
- Using a hand fork, loosen the soil and remove weeds
- Make sure you pull out the roots as well as shoots
- Shake the soil gently off the roots, back into the beds
Step 1: Separate the weeds
- Now it’s time to sort the ‘good’ weeds (annual weeds) that we can use in compost from the ‘bad’ weeds (perennial weeds)
- Annual weeds have fine, hair-like roots.
- Perennial weeds have large, thick roots
- Sort the weeds into annuals and perennials. Annuals can go into the compost bin, and perennial weeds should be thrown away
